As the world advances, written communication is one way to unite people from different walks of life. Businesses are run, interviews are done, and online relations are borne through written communication.

Through written communication we are also able to curve out a unique position for ourselves be it at our workplaces or in day to day interactions with family and friends. In our emails, text messages, and posts on social media sites, we reveal a bit about who we are.

How you present yourself to the world can cultivate respect and influence for you. Indeed, it can help you to attract and keep people that may determine how you progress in life. Therefore, it is critical that you constantly work on your written communication better in order to present your best face to the world.

Here are some tips that will help you to become better in your written communication.

1. Expand your vocabulary: to express yourself clearly, you need a good range of words. You can do this by using dictionaries, there are many online dictionaries that you can use. Strive to learn the word, its meaning, spelling and how it can be used in a sentence.

2. Read regularly: reading widens your scope and knowledge of new words. It introduces you to different writing styles, how to use words appropriately and the correct tenses. People often say that we learn to write best by reading. You should choose books or articles with topics that interest you.

3. Just do it: the best way to improve your written communication is get a pen and paper or sit in front of your computer or pad and actually write. Be prepared to write several versions of each text because, even for professional writers, the first draft is never perfect. Remember, practice makes perfect.

4. Use short sentences and paragraphs: short sentences are easier to read than long sentences. Break the sentence into two if it feels like it’s getting long. Limit your paragraphs to three sentences to make it easier for the reader to follow your thought pattern. Don’t ramble on and on, know when to move on to the next thought.

5. Keep it simple: It is tempting to use hard words to prove your mastery of the English language. However, this can lead to confusion. No one likes to read a message more than once before they figure out what you are saying. If it is not clear to you, chances are, the other person will not understand it.

6. Bullet your content: It is easier to understand bullets and lists than block text. This is especially true when you are dealing with multiple ideas or topics. Bullet or list your points to break up your text and make it easier to understand.

7. Proof-read: Never hit the send, submit or comment button before you proofread what you have written. You can also use computer applications such as Grammarly or the review function in MS Word.
